While many eyes were fixed on the FishOMania Grand Final on Saturday, 19th July, another major qualifier was quietly unfolding at Rookery Waters. The latest Maver Match This qualifier saw 2022’s champion Sam Brown secure his place in this year’s Grand Final.
Drawing peg 24 on the favoured Magpie Lake, Sam delivered an outstanding performance, weighing in with an impressive 238lb 10oz haul. Opting for a straightforward approach, Sam alternated between short lines with casters and worm, alongside his right-hand edge swim. Despite initially hoping to make meat work, it ultimately failed to produce bites.
Consistently rotating his short and edge lines, Sam made steady progress before fish moved onto his topkit line directly in front of his nets in the last 45 minutes. This final burst secured him the victory and qualification, much to his relief.
What a relief as felt like I was running out of chances.

Congratulations to Sam Brown, who becomes the 18th angler to seal a place in this year’s Maver Match This Grand Final. He joins an already impressive line-up that features former champions and top names including Jamie Hughes, Andy Power, and Jack Williams.
