Blistering 29-degree heat didn’t stop the weights piling up at Larford Lakes on Wednesday, 18th June, as the latest Golden Reel qualifier produced some serious action across both the Speci and Match lakes. Mark Griffiths emerged victorious with an incredible 445lb 9oz haul from peg 2 on the Speci Lake, booking his second trip to the Golden Reel Grand Final in the process.
Drawn on an end peg, Mark made the most of the conditions by mugging carp for around four hours before switching to the edge for the final stint of the match. The tactic paid off handsomely, with multiple double-figure fish to 20lb helping him fill seven nets in total. Despite a near-total lack of breeze, the venue fished exceptionally well, with several big weights also surpassing the 250lb mark.
Second place went to Carl Brooks, who drew peg 1 on the Match Grass section and caught steadily throughout the day to amass a superb 374lb. His efforts earned him a well-deserved Semi-Final place. Joining him in the semis is Dale Jackson, who weighed in 280lb 14oz from peg 16 on the Match Burr lake, securing third overall with another big weight in sweltering conditions.
