Only two chances remained to make it through to this year’s FishOMania Grand Final, and one of the sport’s biggest names made his count. Double champion Andy Bennett secured a dramatic qualification at Moorlands Farm on Saturday, 5th July, winning the penultimate qualifier of the year.
Drawn on peg 16 on Bank Pool, the Guru and Mainline Match star delivered a superb 202lb 12oz net of mainly carp to finish just ahead of Jordan Holloway, who ran him close from peg 6 with 189lb 11oz. Although no stranger to the venue, this was Andy’s first time fishing on Bank Pool. With limited knowledge of that particular lake, he made a few calls in advance to get a feel for the likely tactics. In particular, venue regular Simon Jones, who offered valuable insight, suggesting that skimmers would feed early before the carp moved in later.
With the wind proving difficult, Andy ruled out long pole and mugging and instead kept things simple. He fished meat and casters short, with micros fed down the edge. The plan worked brilliantly in the opening stages, bringing around 50lb of skimmers and a similar amount of carp during the first three hours. Jordan Holloway enjoyed a brilliant spell down the edge, piling pressure on from the opposite bank.
Andy couldn’t get his edge swim to produce. However, a well-timed return to his short caster line paid off with several big carp, including one around 12lb, that proved crucial as Jordan’s catch rate slowed in the final hour.
Warren Jennings rounded out the top three with 151lb 5oz from Meadow Pool peg 58. The result guarantees Andy’s return to the £50,000 Grand Final, where he’ll be targeting a record equaling third FishOMania title.
Eyes on a Third FishOMania Title
