Today, The Angling Trust has revealed details of the three squads that will participate in the Youth World Coure Angling Championships later this summer. The Guru U15, England U20, and Sensas U25 teams will compete on the DTD Canal in Serbia this August.

Following a series of assessment days and talent pathway sessions for squad selection held during March and April, team managers Mark Downes, Jason Kirk, Joe Roberts, and Matt Godfrey have revealed “three of the strongest squads ever selected”.

Guru England U15 Squad

The U15 squad is managed by Joe Roberts and Matt Godfrey. The team consists of the returning Alfie Swelton and Barnaby Newman. New caps will be handed to Charlie Drinkwater, Charlie Isaacs, and Tommy Higginbottom.

England U20 Squad

The England U20 team cleaned up at last year’s World Champs, taking team gold in addition to individual gold and silver medals. Manager Jason Kirk is hoping for a similar result this time around. World Champion Joshua Duffy, Silver medalist Billy Kirk, George McHugh and Aflie Nicholls return from last year’s squad. They are joined by three debutants: Harry Franklin, Jacob Lees, and George Geddes.

Sensas England U25 Squad

The England U25 team was selected by Manager Mark Downes and assistant manager Darran Bickerton. The team includes the return of last year’s members Josh Derry, Josh Newman, Will McCranor, and Lewis Bray. Harry Franklin, Jacob Lees, and James Geddes will make their debut at this year’s competition.

England U25 Manager Mark Downes added:

The teams have been given plenty of homework to do before departure as this will be a tricky venue to master. The feeder team earned bronze on here last year, but this is all float fishing and we’re on it a couple of weeks later than their match.

It’s a huge canal off the Danube and if there’s colour in the water then we’re looking to target skimmers and carassio but if it’s clear then it’ll be catfish on the slider at 40m.

The teams which have been selected are a mixture of experience and raw talent with many coming through the England pathway. We’re taking some exceptionally team-orientated anglers who have had good seasons on the domestic scene too so I’m sure we’ll do well.

This year’s Youth World Coarse Angling Championships will take place on 10th and 11th August.
