Tommy Pickering has stepped down as Manager of the England Freestyle Method Feeder team after three years in charge. His departure marks the end of a key period for one of the Angling Trust’s newest international squads, which he helped build from the ground up.

Pickering, who has represented England for an incredible 48 years, was appointed in early 2023. Drawing on decades of international and managerial experience, he worked quickly to create a structure, secure sponsors, and prepare the team for its first appearance on the world stage.

Three Campaigns on the World Stage

Under Pickering’s guidance, England competed in three Freestyle Method Feeder World Championships.

The debut came in November 2023 on Spain’s Júcar River. England started strongly and were in medal contention after day one. However, a tough final session saw them finish eighth overall.

In 2024, the team travelled to Plovdiv in Bulgaria looking to improve on that result. It proved a difficult championship and England ended the week in 14th place, well outside the medal positions.

Pickering’s final campaign was the 2025 World Championship at Portugal’s vast Odivelas Dam. Despite thorough preparation and a mix of experienced anglers and young talent, England finished 11th.

Time to Pass the Baton

Now aged 70, Pickering said the time was right to step down.

There is no greater honour than representing your country as an angler or manager. This is my 48th year representing England and the pride of putting that Three Lions shirt on is the same now as it was all those years ago.

I’m proud to have managed the England Ladies, Feeder, and the Freestyle Feeder teams in 19 World Championships, winning 20 team and individual medals along the way. I always said this would be my last manager role, and now it’s time to pass the baton on.

He also thanked those who had supported the team during his tenure.

To all the anglers, sponsors, and supporters who have backed us around the world, I’d like to say a huge thanks. That support makes a massive difference to the management teams and anglers.

Building for the Future

Steve Fitzpatrick, Angling Trust Head of Competitions & Team England, praised the work Pickering has done.

I can’t thank Tommy enough for the work he has put in over the past three years. He leaves the England Freestyle Method Feeder team on a solid footing with engaged sponsors and a strong culture for the next manager to build on.

The Angling Trust will advertise for a new manager in the coming weeks. The successful candidate will prepare the squad for the 2026 World Championship in Hungary.

Tommy Pickering may be stepping away from management, but his link with England teams will continue. He plans to keep fishing for the Masters Feeder and Veterans Float teams, ensuring his extraordinary connection with the Three Lions shirt enters its fifth decade.
