A busy weekend of Golden Reel qualifiers saw anglers compete on both Saturday and Sunday for a spot in this year’s final. The sixth qualifier of the campaign saw the focus turn to Rookery Waters in Huntingdon on the Saturday. Simon Skelton dominated the field, winning by nearly 40lb to add his name to the list of this year’s finalists.
The match was held on Rookery’s Raven, Jay and Crow Lakes. Simon secured his victory from peg 20 on Raven with a massive 217lb 3oz. In his victory interview on Facebook, Simon described his fantastic day of fishing. He started well, catching 25 fish in the first 90 minutes in 3 feet of water, before switching to shallower water and fishing with meat. He then moved to the “toenail line” later to keep his weight building.
The two semi-final spots were taken by Ben Townsend, who came second with 180lb 13oz from page 38 on Jay Lake. Rob Taylor rounded out the final three with 176lb 4oz from peg 9 on Raven.
